Cockatrice
Cockatrice
Entirely based on a myth
The cockatrice was a 12th century myth created in "Pliny's natural history". Thought to be a rooster with no feathers on its torso with a dragon tail and bat wings. It would be created when a reptile incubates a bird egg. This monster was related to another myth, the basilisk. It shared to similarity of turning things into stone with its gaze, and people would often confuse the two myths. In Dungeons and Dragons the cockatrice only has small purple feathers on the top of its head, and leathery gray skin. It also has to bite its victim to turn it stone instead of just looking at it.
