In the loneliest places, tiny lights make sure it stays lonely.
Will-O-Whisp
Mostly based on Folklore
Will-O-Whisps are a commonly known folklore monster that can be found all throughout mythology in every continent in some way or another. Their first appearance in mythology is in old english folklore, where they are thought to be lost spirits that drift in the places they died, leading travelers to magical places and forgotten relics. They are described as tiny globules of light drifting around three and a half feet off the ground. They can be found in any color and sometimes flicker out when frightened. They are most commonly found floating above lonely places such as swamps and marshes. The word Will-O-Whisp means "Giddy flame" in latin. In d&d, Will-O-Whisps are much more sinister, and are souls trapped by dark magic to lead adventures astray then electrocute them to death in order to turn them into more Will-O-Whisps.
