Mostly based on mythology
Treants are based on the Ents from J.R Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings". They are described as a humanoid, fourteen feet tall, with a troll, and tree like appearance. The word Ent translates from old english to "Giant". In d&d, treants were originally called Ents, but The Tolkien Estate was going to sue them if they did not change it due to copyright issues. Their description in d&d is similar, but they have multiple limbs and don't reproduce with each other or use pronouns.
